Poker Guide for Beginners
Learning to play poker can be an exhausting and time consuming experience, but once you know the basics you can play and win, although you'll still be a long way before being professional and winning on a regular basis. As a beginner, you may find yourself making the same mistakes over and over again, but don't worry... help is on its way. Below are the 4 traps that new players commonly make. We'll show you how to prevent them:
1) Playing too many hands before the flop.
New players play way too many hands pre-flop. You should only play about 20% of your pre-flop hands. Also, when the dealer deals out cards, the first thing every person does is look at their cards. If you are looking at your cards as soon as they are dealt to you, then you're not watching the other players while they look at their own cards. This is your first chance at getting a read on an opponent's hand so don't miss it. Your cards are not going to change and you have no need to look at them until it's your turn to act.
2) Taking hands too far past the flop.
Not only do beginners play too many hands, they also go too far with them. Many players take any pair or any draw to the river. You should be continuing with only top pair or better.
3) Playing by "feeling" rather than by cards and numbers.
So many new players play hands because they have a "feeling" about the cards. This is definately incorrect play. Poker is a mathematical game and so everything that can possibly happen is about the odds.
4) Don't let emotions cloud your decisions!
Poker is about your decisions and to make the best possible ones means that you have to approach decision making with a clear frame of mind.
In summary: Don't play alot of hands before the flop; base your decisions on correct factors; and keep your emotions in line. Keep these basics in mind and you'll get the hang of the game without breaking the bank in the process. Good Luck!
